Follow the Leader?

Jim Prentice, Canada’s Environment Minister, recently declared in a speech to a Montreal business audience that “the Canadian government says it will follow U.S. President Barack Obama’s lead at next week’s Copenhagen climate summit — and will propose to do no more, no less, than its neighbour.” (Source: CBC News)

My question to the Canadian government is then: why bother showing up? How can Mr. Prentice justify his presence and that of his official delegation, there on the dime of taxpayers?

A critical lens has been pointing at Canada in the lead-up to Copenhagen, to the point where we are jokingly asking our American classmates for USA flags to wear. However, there is a great deal of positive rebuttles, such as the ambition of 8 out of our 10 provinces to stay on course with Kyoto targets. All is not lost…
